Vail Health Hospital's Level II Nursery provides care for stable babies born after 32 weeks gestation and those who need close watching or extra help after birth. The nursery staff includes registered nurses who are specially trained in Level II care and neonatal nurse practitioners.
Neonatal nurse practitioners are in close contact with telemedicine, tele-echocardiography, and consultation with neonatologist at the Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children Level IV NICU. Level II staff work closely with families to teach them about any special procedures or medications babies may need at home.
Babies born several weeks early, due to pre-term labor, will most likely spend some time in a Level II Nursery for observation. Babies with more serious conditions may need to be transferred to a higher level care unit in a larger hospital.
